Hi, Taylor. Carrie Robinson indicated that you're going to graduate from JHU next May and are in need of career advice, contacts, etc. I'm a JHU alumnus, A&S 1970, working full-time for a publisher, writing books about careers.
It's probably stating the obvious, but any volunteer experience you can get that uses your writing skills would be helpful in building a portfolio. For example, you could write publicity for a student activity. I presume the JHU News-Letter still exists (in my day it was housed in the Gatehouse), and you could also send press releases to the Sun.
Would it be helpful for me to help you get in contact with the publicist for my publisher? She is first-rate at what she does, and I'm guessing that she might be able to offer you some tips on getting started in this field.
I don't know much about the field of public-policy advocacy, although I'm trying to educate myself about it for a book that I'm writing right now. It seems reasonable that a good portfolio of advocacy writing would open doors in that field.
This comment window is rather small, so maybe you'd prefer to write to me directly at my work address, email@example.com.
